This was my third trip to the beautiful Thai island of Koh Phangan for the famed Full Moon Party (FMP), all within two years (this one wasn’t initially planned, but stemmed from a last-minute desire to leave Cambodia and fortuitous timing).
As I shared a ride from the dock with three friendly Dutch guys, we ruminated on how booked up the island was and what we were going to do about accommodation. It was August – one of the busiest months of the year due to northern hemisphere summer holidays – and a few days before the… Read More Koh Tao 2016
After another draining and unanticipated day of travel via a morning ferry from Koh Rong to Sihanoukville and five hour bus back to Phnomh Penh (complete with me JUST making the impatiently waiting minibus), I jumped in a tuk tuk toward my destination – the other Mad Monkey hostel.
I had changed my plans after a disappointing night in Sihanoukville and was heading to the much-anticipated Koh Rong, which I had heard was an incredibly beautiful backpackers party paradise, like ‘Thailand thirty years ago’. I hoped I would have more luck there.
I had heard extremely mixed reviews of Sihanoukville, from Adventurous Kate who dubbed it “the ultimate backpacker party paradise” to other bloggers who likened it more to a seedy cesspool. The last thing I had expected was to be gripping onto my seat, trying desperately not to be sick or possibly die (it felt like) in a dramatically rollicking fast boat on the way from Gili Trawangan to Ubud, Bali. I miraculously managed it, in awe of most of the other passengers, who seemed far… Read More Ubud, Bali – an unexpected weekend
The volcanic eruption had provided me with an unanticipated extra stint in Gili T, where I had just spent an amazing and unexpectedly emotional week – and this time I had a plan.
I managed to see my beloved travel pillow go flying behind me from the top deck of the somewhat thrilling fast boat ride from Gili T to Bali as I forgot myself and moved my head up an inch. It wasn’t really explained that if you sit up on this deck you have to pin… Read More Seminyak – what’s all the yak about?
A volcano had erupted on Lombok: three people had apparently died while climbing it the day before. But the five of us new friends were headed to a boat party off the paradise island of Gili T that Wednesday, and we had hardly a care in the world.
